- 16TH CENTURY FLORENTINE OIL PORTRAIT,
16TH CENTURY FLORENTINE OIL PORTRAIT, MEDICIItalian Florentine oil on board portrait of a gentleman, late 16th century; possibly Pietro di Cosimo deà Medici, the son of Cosimo I de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1519-1574). "Petrus Magni Cosmi R" painted in gold lettering above the sitter. Unsigned. En verso, "No. 57" written in script, lower edge of bracing, along with two red wax seals. The seal decorated with a ship possibly dates to the 17th century, while the other with the initials "JH" possibly dates to the 18th century. Cross bracing applied to back of the painted panel. Housed in a gilt wood frame. Sight - 25 1/2" H x 20" W. Framed - 30" H x 24 1/2" W. Late 16th century. Provenance: Blount County, TN Living Estate. Note - From the late 14th century to the 18th century, the Medici family was one the most prominent and wealthy families in Italy, with its members included among the ranks of eminent bankers, politicians, papacy, and European royalty. Their enduring legacy is evident by their patronage of early and High Renaissance artists and architects, including Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, and Vasari. Pietro de' Medici (1554-1604) was the youngest son of Cosimo I de' Medici, In 1571, he married his first cousin, Eleonora di Garzia di Toledo, whom he accused of adultery and is believed to have strangled (by some accounts, with a dog leash) in 1576. He spent considerable time in Spain, where he began to accumulate large gambling debts, and had a number of illegitimate children. In 1579, he brought Italian troops to Spain and led them on a mission to Portugal. An arranged marriage to the daughter of the Portuguese Duke of Vila Real did little to stabilize his finances; he eventually sought help from the Pope (unsuccessfully) in his efforts to use part of the family fortune to cover his debts. He died deeply in debt before the age of 50.

- PETITION TO ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S SECRETARY
PETITION TO ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S SECRETARY OF WAR EDWIN STANTON, AUGUST 25, 1863, WITH AUTOGRAPHED NOTE SIGNED BY STANTONPETITION TO ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S SECRETARY OF WAR EDWIN STANTON, AUGUST 25, 1863, WITH AUTOGRAPHED NOTE SIGNED BY STANTON, Transcription: Sir, The undersigned would respectfully represent, that, in the month of October, 1857, a firm under the style of Pairo & Nourse doing business as Bankers in this city, suspended payment, leaving several hundred creditors with demands in the aggregate amounting to some $200,000, and assets at the time deemed ample to satisfy them: that a portion of these assets have been disposed of and three dividends have been pass'd to the creditors: that most of the residue of these assets consists of real estate lying chiefly in the Western States: that an opportunity now offers of disposing of some of this real estate at suitable prices: that to this end the relinquishment of the Right of Dower in these lands by Mrs. Pairo, wife of the senior member of said firm is indispensable, but that the said Mrs. Pairo is now at Richmond, having been sent thither from Baltimore some months since by the Military Authorities for alleged disloyal language and conduct, and that in no way can she execute said relinquishment whilst in the Rebel States which would be deemed valid in the Courts of the Loyal States, as the undersigned are advised by Counsel learned in the Law. The undersigned, therefore, who for some years have been acting as a Standing Committee in part of the said Creditors to guard their interests as well as their own as very heavy Creditors of said Firm, would respectfully request that the said Mrs. Pairo may be permitted to return to this city, if but for a single day, in order to execute valid relinquishment of Dower to such Deeds as may await her signature, and also execute a Power of Attorney to some person within the loyal States who may hereafter execute for her such relinquishment as occasion may demand. The undersigned would further represent, that, until within a few days, it had been supposed that this relinquishment of Right of Dower might be legally executed at Richmond, but that they are now Satisfied that it can not be done, and that the inrerests of several hundred loyal citisens wch very materially suffer should the required relinquishment not be effected. It is believed that Mr. Pairo would not ebject to the return of his wife for the purpose named, and it is also believed (though no the slightest communication on the subject has been had) - that Mrs. Pairo herself would be willing to make the journey hither/Very Respectfully,/Edmund Flagg, Clerk of Copyrights, Dept. of Int. On reverse: The rule of the service forbidding persons to leave from the rebels within our lines and return cannot at moment be relaxed./Edwin M. Stanton/Sec. of War/Aug. 29/63

In carved and gilt gesso frame. The following biography is based on information provided by McGuire Fine Art of Northville, Michigan. Born in Amsterdam, Holland, Cornelis Zwaan became a portrait, landscape and genre painter who rarely exhibited his work while he was alive because he felt out of touch with the dominant modernism of his time. He attended the Royal Academy of Art in Amsterdam with a scholarship provided by Queen Wilhelmina. His paintings began to find a ready market in the United States by 1909, and this success caused him and his wife to move to America in 1910. They lived in various locales and received portrait commissions from prominent persons including industrialists, bankers, political figures and social celebrities in New York, Chicago, Milwaukee, and Detroit where he was living at the time of his death. In 1923, he became a United States citizen. Painting a portrait of Queen Juliana was the fulfillment of a life-long ambition. In 1952, after arrangements had been completed through the Embassy of the Netherlands and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Hague, sittings began on the first portrait of the Queen to be painted from live sittings rather than photographs. She was so pleased with the results that she knighted him and decorated him with the Order of Orange Nassau. After a private showing and a public exhibition at the Detroit Historical Museum of Art, the portrait was sent to the Embassy of the Netherlands, Washington, D.C. It was shown in New York City and a number of other cities before being returned to the Holland Michigan Museum whose board of directors had originally commissioned Zwaan to paint the portrait. oil on canvas Dimensions: 24 1/2"H x 29 1/4"W (sight), 32 1/2"H x 37 1/2"W (frame)

Text block tight.Plus newspaper clipping from The Savannah Press 18 Aug. 1926 with Olmstead's account of the "Defense of Fort Pulaski" and photocopy of Olmstead's eulogy for Matthew Hopkins after his death in 1916.Fort Pulaski was constructed on Cockspur Island at the mouth of the Savannah River in the 1830s and 1840s. After the War of 1812 the United States planned a series of coastal defenses having just come through a war with the greatest naval power of the day. The Savannah River was of course the gateway to Savannah the largest port in Georgia. Early planning of the fort fell to recent USMA graduate Lt. Robert E. Lee. Beginning in 1829 Lee saw to the design of the fort and a system of drains and dikes so that the marshy island could support the massive walls of the 5-sided fort. In 1831 Lt. Joseph Mansfield took over the fort's construction which would take nearly a decade and a half.In January 1861 before Georgia's secession from the Union state troops occupied the fort so Union forces could not. They also began repairing the fort which was in bad shape after 15 years sitting empty. The state troops cleaned out the moat and began mounting the guns and when Confederate troops under Col. Charles Olmstead took command of the fort it was nearly restored and ready for action. When Federal troops captured Port Royal South Carolina General Robert E. Lee ordered Tybee Island and others abandoned and defenses concentrated at Fort Pulaski. Lee believed that Pulaski's walls could not possibly be damaged by bombardment from Tybee or any other point being nearly a mile away and he had designed the fort's nearly 8-foot thick walls. In this Lee was wrong. General William Tecumseh Sherman decided to take the fort by siege and put Capt. Quincy Gillmore (Eng. Corps) in charge of constructing defenses on Tybee and other smaller islands to keep the fort from being supplied. Gillmore's men constructed a series of artillery batteries working mostly at night to keep the defenders of the fort from discovering what they were doing. By April 9 Gillmore had 20 cannons and 14 mortars in position. The next morning he demanded the surrender of the fort to which Olmstead replied that he was there to defend it not surrender it. Just after 8am the batteries started a steady fire at the walls. It became apparent after a few hours that the shells from the rifled cannons would be able to break through the walls. Olmstead saw it too and by the next day after a couple of 30-foot holes were opened in the southeast wall shells were striking the interior of the fort. When at least one came close to one of the powder magazines Olmstead decided to surrender knowing that a magazine explosion would only mean the loss of many more lives and no victory. In less than 36 hours the impregnable fort was taken.Federal troops took over the fort and occupied it during the war effectively cutting off Savannah from the sea. It also served as a prison for captured Confederate troops.Charles H. Olmstead (1837-1926) was a member of the 1st Georgia Infantry (Olmstead's Regiment - one of upwards of 30 units calling themselves "1st GA Regt.") organized 31 May 1861. This unit spent most of its time in the Carolinas around Charleston until called out to halt Sherman's advance late in the war. Most of Olmstead's papers are in the Southern Historical Collection UNC.
